Meet Dr. David Fernkopf, KNEA’s New Executive Director
After an extensive nationwide search conducted by a leading talent acquisition firm, the Kansas NEA leaders are confident that Dr. Fernkopf, a Kansas native which a rich history in education, administration, unionism, and advocacy, is the ideal candidate for this challenging position.
“Dr. Fernkopf’s extensive background in educational leadership, significant union involvement, and deep commitment to Kansas public education and our students have equipped him well for this role. His experience as a former elementary teacher and principal, coupled with his recent positions as the Assistant Director of Career Standards and Assessment Services Team with the Kansas State Department of Education and Adjunct Professor with Fort Hays State University, reflects his strong qualifications. Additionally, his dedication to union values is evident through his long-standing membership with KNEA, including service on several boards and committees and various leadership roles within NEA,” said KNEA President Sherri Schwanz, emphasizing Dr. Fernkopf’s unwavering commitment to public education.
Since beginning his new role full-time, Dr. Fernkopf has prioritized one-on-one meetings with staff and leaders. “I Know that change is challenging, but also exciting. I also know I have much to learn from our amazing staff, leaders, and members as I work to earn trust and grow collaboration. I am committed to building a strategy for the growth of our organization alongside people whose passion for our work, public education, students, and our members are the foundation of who we are.”
Dr. Fernkopf, who resides in the Topeka area with his husband Paul, and their three teenage children, all of whom are products of the Kansas public school system, brings a personal understanding of the challenges and opportunities within our schools.
