The Kansas National Education Association (KNEA) stands firmly behind educators, students and families of Topeka, Shawnee Mission, Olathe and Kansas City, Kansas, regarding the recent investigations launched by the United States Department of Education.

These investigations target policies that affirm and protect students and run counter of the values that guide KNEA’s work.

Our vision is clear and concise: A great public school for every student.

Our mission is to advocate for education professionals and unite our members, Kansans and the nation to fulfill the promise of public education – preparing all students to succeed in a diverse and interdependent world.

Our core values, which guide our work and define our mission, include equal opportunity for all students, a just society, professionalism and partnership

Public education is key to building respect and equality of every individual in our diverse society. We believe that every student has the human and civil right to a high-quality public education that respects their identity, protects their dignity and nurtures their potential.

We support Kansas educators and all Kansas students, regardless of race, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion or ethnicity.

Our core value of professionalism means KNEA believes in the expertise and judgement of Kansas education professionals. Educators must be trusted to exercise their professional judgment in creating safe, inclusive learning environments.

Partnerships with parents, families, communities and other interest holders are also essential to student success and a quality public education. However, the investigation undermines the autonomy of local school districts and the rights of students to learn free from discrimination.

KNEA asks that efforts focus on supporting, not policing, schools that strive to meet the needs of all students.
