Review: Scores of volunteers converged on Mississippi to open Freedom Schools in the summer of 1964. The schools taught the students about their civil rights and encouraged people to register to vote. When three volunteers turned up missing and later were found dead, national attention was brought to the cause. President Johnson shortly signed into law the Voting Rights Act, making voting discrimination practices illegal.
