May 2011 State Board News


The State Board held a one-day meeting in May, during which they:

·       Received recommendations from the Special Education Advisory Council regarding seclusion of students

·       Received a timeline for review of history/government curriculum standards

·       Heard an update on the New Superintendent Mentor Program

·       Approved recommendations from the Professional Practices Commission

·       Approved a Strategic Agenda for 2011-2012

·       Acted on reappointments

o   Sharon Klose, NEA Shawnee Mission, to the Professional Standards Board

o   Lory Mills, Derby NEA, to the Professional Standards Board

o   Suzanne Bangert, NEA Shawnee Mission, to the Professional Practices Commission

o   Ruth Goff, NEA Shawnee Mission, to the Licensure Review Committee

·       Approved 1 licensure waiver, special education

·       Approved new cut scores for "regenerated" licensure content tests

·       Approved a continuing assessment contract for the Center for Educational Testing and Evaluation at KU

Next Meeting

The June meeting is scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday, June 14 and 15, in Topeka.  The meeting agenda and materials should be available on the KSDE website no later than Monday, June 6.
